Artist Residency

In addition to it’s Art Space in Budapest the Foundation also maintains the ‘Dr. Kahán Éva Arts Residence’ in San Sano, Tuscany.

San Sano

The name comes from the Christian martyr Ansano, of the Anicia family from Rome, resulting Sant’ Ansano first and then San Sano.

The town was probably was a fortified settlement hosting a small tower and a church already included in the papal tithes of 1276/1277 which, along with the church of Adine, was part of the parish of San Polo in Rosso, patronaged by the Ricasoli.

After centuries of war, castles and strongholds were usually transformed into agricultural residencies and, apart from their ancient oak and chestnut woods, quickly turned into ancient purgulae for the cultivation of the vine.

In 1773 it was mentioned as the birthplace of the best Chianti wine: “The territory of Chianti is estimated in thirty-forty miles and the best wine is produced in Ama, Broglio, Castellina, San Sano and Cacchiano”.

Residency programme

The Foundation grant a 1-3 month long creative period between October and May to artists selected from a pool of applicants, with a focus on artists from the Central European region. At any one time a maximum of three resident artists can receive the monthly financial support of 1.250 EUR, use the artists’ studio and also the motor vehicle which belongs to the estate. While they are there, they will be supported by a local assistant who will help them cope with the minor challenges posed by their tasks and organise their local life and work. The residency house is located next to the guesthouse of the estate and a grove of olive trees. If they wish, resident artists can take part in harvesting either wine grapes or olives, take care of beehives and engage in other agricultural activities. The artists become part of the local life and strengthen the artistic spirit and image of the place through their works. In return for this opportunity the Foundation requests that each resident artist to contribute one of the works of art which they create during their time there.
